“Cultural Affairs Minister to Inaugurate Sudhakantha Museum at Royal Global University”

GUWAHATI, September 6, 2025: To honour and celebrate the timeless legacy of the bard of Brahmaputra Dr Bhupen Hazarika and inspire the younger generation with his ideals on the august occasion of his birth centenary year, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Centre for Creativity at The Assam Royal Global University (RGU) will inaugurate “Sudhakantha Museum” on the University campus and host the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Centenary Oration Series from 8th to 26th September 2025. The Inaugural Ceremony on 8th September will be graced by Shri Bimal Bora, Minister of Cultural Affairs, Assam, and Ms. Mridusmita Das Bora, a celebrated Sattriya dancer, entrepreneur, and cultural ambassador.

In this context, Prof. Amarjyoti Choudhury, Professor Emeritus & Chair Professor of the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Centre for Creativity, remarked, “This year marks the birth centenary of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, and we believe it is an opportunity to regenerate public enthusiasm and admiration for him in a way that can endure for at least another 100 years—until the next centenary.”

He emphasized that a comprehensive scientific study of Dr. Hazarika’s songs and creations is essential to highlight his contributions on the global stage. “His legacy lies in staying deeply rooted in his culture while reaching out to embrace universal dimensions. The objective is to study his creative methods and apply them across other disciplines of the University, enabling students to understand how creativity can connect them to society and, in turn, bring recognition and rewards from it,” he added.

The Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Centenary Oration Series will feature a distinguished lineup of speakers. Prof. Amarjyoti Choudhury will open the series with his talk on “The Song that Fetched New Seeds: Sudhakantha at His Creative Height.” Eminent historian Prof. Shiela Bora will deliver an oration on “Mohabahu Brahmaputra: The Sentinel of History and the Multifaceted Cultural Traditions of Assam.” Bimal Kumar Dev Medhi will present on the musical performances of “Xaagor Xongomot” and “Mahabahu Brahmaputra”, while P.J. Baruah, Distinguished Professor, RSCOM, RGU, will speak on “Dr. Bhupen Hazarika: Philosopher and Guide to Assamese Identity.”

Prof. Pradip Jyoti Mahanta, Department of English, RGU, will discuss “Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s Art Persona and Sankaradeva.” Prof. Surajit Mukhopadhyay, Director, Centre for Inter-Disciplinary Research, will address “Songs of Resistance and Hope: The Idea of Universality in Bhupen Hazarika.” In addition to these, several other noted participants will contribute to the Oration Series, enriching the dialogue on Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s enduring legacy.
